summary Special Issue Rationale and Focal Topics:

Cloud computing technology has rapidly emerged as a new paradigm to address resource sharing based on different requirements in nowadays. In the AEC arenas, this emerging technology facilitates the development of a collaborative and integrated environment for the project stakeholders. This undoubtedly will impose profound and worldwide effects on the AEC industry. Building Information Modelling (BIM) has been attracting more attentions from AEC researchers as it is envisaged to provide solutions for multi-disciplinary issues in our industry. One of major critical technological components in BIM concerns the real time processing of mega data and the context-aware interaction with BIM data from large volume of end users. With this in mind, this special issue aims to attract high quality research papers to explore the recent state-of-the-art developments in theory and applications of cloud computing-based BIM technology in AEC. Selected topics within the scope of the special issue include conceptual and theoretical frameworks, technological innovation and empirical research. Topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Cloud-BIM framework in AEC industry;
  • Virtualization technology and Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) towards Cloud-BIM;
  • Innovative collaboration tool for Cloud-BIM;
  • Context-Aware Cloud-BIM;
  • Cloud-BIM and sustainability;
  • Cloud-BIM based modelling/visualization/simulation/Virtual Reality/Augmented Reality;
  • Training and education for cloud-BIM in AEC sector.
