This file is outdated. It shows what kind of instructions were needed in the early days (mid 1990s) of electronic publishing.

1. Tools for readers:

  1. WWW browser. To be compatible with as many browsers as possible we are using conservative HTML on these pages and are avoiding particular browser specific extensions. The suggested browser is Mozilla or Netscape Navigator 7.
  2. Adobe Acrobat Viewer or (exceptionally):
    • Gzip decompression package, if they select to download compressed version of the paper. See below.
    • Post Script viewer if they select to download PostScript print version and they do not have a Post script printer or would like to read the journal on-line. See below.

2. Tools for authors:

  1. Word processing package etc. We suggest one that can write Rich text or MS Word format (commercial).
  2. (opt) Printer driver to make .PS files. Commercial; part of Windows, Macintosh and most UNIX systems)
  3. (opt) Gzip compression package to compress files before transmission.
  4. Uuencoder or
  5. E-mail program that allows sending large binary files.

3. Tools for reviewers:

  1. E-mailer that allows receiving large binary files or Uudecoder .
  2. Adobe Acrobat Viewer or
    • Gzip decompression program.
    • Post Script viewer if they do not have a Post script printer or would like to read the journal on-screen.

4. Tools for editors:

To set up a paper we use:

  1. Rtf ToHtml converter.
  2. Wmf ToBmp converter.
  3. Display package to convert Bmp to Gif.
  4. Itconfier (that's out own filter to hypertexify itcon formatted files)
  5. Gzip compression package.

Acrobat Reader

Acrobat Reader enables viewing and printing of files in Portable Document Format (PDF). They are often labeled as pdf. PDF is a compact and portable format which enables the exchange of print quality documents. To get Adobe Acrobat Reader:

Gzip

This compression program can compress one file at a time. It is available free for DOS , Macintosh and Unix .

Ghostscript

This program allows on screen viewing of Post Script files and printing on non post script printers. It is available for DOS/Windows , Macintosh and Unix (source) .

UUencode/UUdecode

This program converts binary file into ASCII and vice versa. The tool is available for DOS , Windows and Macintosh . It is built into Unix systems.

Pkzip/Unzip

This program compresses and stores many files into a single archive. It is available for DOS , Macintosh and UNIX .

Netscape Navigator

This is the suggested WWW client avaliable for Windows, Macintosh and Unix platfoms at Netscape's WWW server .
